Metal turning is the mechanical processing of a blank with cutting tools. This method is used to machine external and internal surfaces. The work is performed on specialized machines, including automated equipment. A cutting tool removes material from the surface until the required shape and dimensions are achieved.
The main operations performed on a lathe include:
- thread cutting;
- turning grooves, pockets, and shoulders;
- reaming and boring holes;
- cutting off blanks.
The blank can be given a conical, cylindrical, or contoured shape.
Productivity and quality depend on the volume of material removed, tool clamping and stability, spindle speed, and the technical condition of the equipment.
